Abstract
1 - Methyl - 6 - nitro - 4 - quinolone - 3 - carboxylic acid is prepared by nitrating 1-methyl - 4 - quinolone - 3 - carboxylic acid with a nitrating agent comprising anhydrous nitric acid (either as such or generated in situ from an alkali metal nitrate) together with another anhydrous mineral acid, such as sulphuric or phosphoric acid.
