Abstract

Suberic acid is prepared by contacting nitric acid with cyclo-octene in the presence of a catalyst comprising a compound of vanadium with a compound of manganese at a temperature of at least 50 DEG C. The catalyst may be composed of a mixture of the metal oxides, or as salts, e.g. alkali metal or ammonium metavanadate, manganese nitrate, chloride, or acetate, used in a proportion corresponding to a ratio MnO/V2O5 of from 0.01 to 100 by weight. The nitric acid may be used as an aqueous solution of concentration from 20% to 80% by weight.
