Abstract
324,220. Johnson, J. Y., (Bergfeld, L.). Jan. 16, 1929. Nitrogen oxides are absorbed from dilute gas mixtures, such as gases from the oxidation of ammonia or from the arc process by treatment with aqueous solutions of compounds of hexavalent chromium or of manganese of a higher valency than two, such as potassium chromate or bichromate, calcium permanganate, manganic sulphate or phosphate, &c. The solution may also contain salts such as sodium or potassium nitrate, or acids such as phophoric or arsenic acid. The absorption may be carried out at ordinary or raised temperature and at raised pressure. The solution or the solid substances obtained by evaporation yield concentrated oxides of nitrogen on heating, and the residues may be oxidized and dissolved for use again.
