Abstract
In the manufacture of ethylene-bis-glycollic acid by nitric acid oxidation of triethylene glycol, the glycol is added gradually to the nitric acid at 40-90 DEG C. The oxidation is preferably carried out in the presence of a vanadium compound, e.g. 0-1 per cent of ammonium vanadate, and the nitric acid may contain sulphuric acid. Nitric acid of higher strength than that originally present (and likewise optionally containing sulphuric acid) may be added gradually to replace the acid consumed in the oxidation, and the process may be operated in batchwise or continuous manner. A detailed example is given and includes a description of the S-benzylthiouranium salt of the product.
