Abstract
Adipic acid is prepared by the nitric acid oxidation of cyclohexanol or cyclohexanone or mixtures obtained by the oxidation of cyclohexane comprising cyclohexanol and/or cyclohexanone, in the presence of both vanadium and copper, either as such or in the form of their oxides or salts, the amount of copper used being between 1 part and 40 parts by weight per part of the vanadium used. The vanadium catalyst may be added as the metal, the oxide, or a salt containing vanadium, for example, vanadium pentoxide and ammonium vanadate. The copper catalyst may be added as metal, oxide or salt, for example, copper sulphate or nitrate. The weight of vanadium catalyst used should be at least 0.01 per cent and preferably at least 0.03 per cent by weight of the amount of nitric acid. In the oxidation of cyclohexanol, amounts of 2 to 10 parts of copper should be used and in the case of cyclohexanone, 2 to 15 parts, preferably in the form of the metal. The temperature may vary between 40 DEG and 110 DEG C. In general, at least two molecular proportions of nitric acid per molecule of starting material should be used. Sulphuric acid may be added, if desired, to the oxidation mixture. The process may be carried out batchwise or continuous as described in Specification 567,525. In examples, the catalysts employed are ammonium vanadate and copper turnings or copper sulphate. Specification 265,959, [Class 2 (iii)], also is referred to.
