Abstract
Substituted malonic acids are obtained by oxidizing corresponding compounds having alcohol or aldehyde groups in place of one or both the carboxylic groups of the acid by means of nitric acid or oxides of nitrogen. The oxidation may be effected in presence of sulphuric acid or a vanadium or molybdenum compound, and the nitrogen oxides may be regenerated in the reaction vessel by introducing oxygen. In the examples: (1) 2-methyl-2-ethyl-propanol-1-one-3 is added gradually at 30--40 DEG C. to nitric acid containing nitrogen oxides, and oxygen is introduced; (2) 2-2-diethyl-propanol-1-one-3 is added to nitric acid of the same composition but at 15--20 DEG C.; (3) 2 - 2 - diethyl propanol - 1 - one - 3 is added gradually at 40 DEG C. to a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids containing ammonium vanadate and traces of nitrogen oxides, and oxygen is introduced. In a similar manner substituted malonic acids may be obtained from 2-ethyl-2-butyl - propanol - 1 - one - 3, 2 - methyl - 2 - ethyl - propane - diol - (1 : 3), and 2 - 2 - diethyl-propanol-1-carboxylic acid-(3).
