Abstract
Hydrogen sulphide or its salts are catalytically oxidized by oxygen in the presence of complex salts of heavy metals with cyclic organic compounds. Industrial gases such as illuminating, coke oven, or producer gas are washed with water, or alkali such as sodium carbonate, and the solution of hydrogen sulphide or of sodium sulphide or hydrosulphide obtained, after addition of a solution of the catalyst, is treated with oxygen or gases containing the same, when oxidation to sulphur or sodium thiosulphate is effected. Ammonium, calcium and other hydrosulphides may be oxidized in the same way. Suitable catalysts are made, according to examples: (1) by mixing an alcoholic solution of 1-oxyanthraquinone with ammoniacal copper hydroxide to form the complex copper salt, (2) by the addition of an alcoholic solution of alizarin to alcoholic manganese acetate, (3) by adding an alcoholic copper acetate solution to a solution of quinizarine in alcohol containing 16 per cent by volume of pyridine. In place of quinizarine, 1 : 2 : 8-trioxyanthraquinone or other suitable anthraquinone derivatives may be used. A solution of h min in pyridine or disodium phosphate is also suitable.ALSO:Complex salts of heavy metals with cyclic organic compounds, used as catalysts for the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide and its salts, are made by mixing solutions in suitable solvents of the cyclic compound and a compound of the metal. In examples: (1) an alcoholic solution of 1-oxyanthraquinone is mixed with ammoniacal copper hydroxide to form the complex copper salt. (2) to 0,009 parts of manganese acetate dissolved in a little alcohol is added an alcoholic solution containing 0,02 parts of alizarin, with immediate formation of a solution of the complex salt: (3) to 0,02 parts of quinizarine in alcohol containing 16 per cent by volume of pyridine is added an alcoholic solution of 0,0086 parts of copper acetate. In place of quinizarine, 1 : 2 : 8-trioxyanthraquinone or other suitable anthraquinone derivatives may be used.
