Abstract

Hydrogen sulphide is removed as sulphur from gases, gas mixtures and liquid hydrocarbons by washing with an aqueous alkaline solution containing: one or more anthraquinone disulphonic acids, a compound of a metal having at least two valency states, and, if necessary, a chelating agent to retain the metal compound in solution. The solution contains 0.5% by weight of any of the disulphonic acids of anthraquinone, e.g. the 2: 6 and 2:7 isomers, and the pH is adjusted to above 7 by the addition of ammonia, alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate or other base. The metal compound may be an ortho, meta or pyrovanadate of ammonia or an alkali metal, e.g. sodium ammonium vanadate, or sodium orthovanadate in concentration M/1000 to M/20 , in addition or in place of the vanadate the salts of: Fe, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni and Co, e.g. FeSO4 and FeU3 in concentrations M/1000 to M/100 may be used. A chelating agent, e.g. a soluble tartrate or EDTA may be added to prevent precipitation of the metal in both its valency states. A 2% solution of sodium phosphate may also be added to the mixture. Specifications 871,233 and 878,251 are referredALSO:Hydrogen sulphide is removed as sulphur from gases, gas mixtures and liquid hydrocarbons by washing with an aqueous alkaline solution containing: one or more anthraquinone disulphonic acids, a compound of a metal having at least two valency states, and, if necessary a chelating agent to retain the metal compound in solution. The metal compound may be an ortho, meta or pyrovanadate of ammonia or an alkali metal, e.g. sodium ammonium vanadate, a sodium orthovanadate in concentration M/1000 to M/20 , in addition to or in place of the vanadate the salts of: Fe, Cu, Mn, Cr, Ni and Co, e.g. FeSO4 or FeCl3 in concentrations M/1000 to M/100 may be used. A chelating agent, e.g. a soluble tartrate or E.D.T.A. may be added to prevent precipitation of the metal in both its valency states. A 2% solution of Na3PO4 may also be added to the mixture. Specifications 871,233 and 878,251 are referred to.
