Abstract

1504706 Removing HIS from gases BRITISH GAS CORP 5 Aug 1975 [6 Aug 1974] 34616/74 Heading C1A A composition for absorbing H 2 S from gases and liquid hydrocarbons comprises an aqueous alkaline solution, e.g. pH 8À5-9À5) containing ions of a metal capable of exhibiting at least two valence states and a quinone of formula where A is an aryl or quinoid nucleus, X' and X<SP>2</SP> are OH when A is aryl or are the O atoms of the quinoid nucleus, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are H or solubilizing groups, e.g. SO 3 H, OH, NO 2 or ONO, provided that when A is an anthracyl or anthraquinoid nucleus, not more than one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is SO 3 H. The quinone may be p-benzoquinone, hydroquinone, H-bonded quinhydrones, 1,4 - naphthaquinone - 2 - SO 3 H, 1 - SO 3 H - 6 - NO 2 (or - 7 - NO 2 )anthraquinone or 1 - SO 3 H - 6 - OH (or -7 - OH) - anthraquinone. The metal ions may be derived from a vanadate, e.g. Na ammonium vanadate or Na orthovanadate, or a salt of Fe or Co, e.g. FeSO 4 or FeCl 3 . A chelating agent may be added. In operation, H 2 S is absorbed in the solution with formation of sulphur and reduction of the solution, which may be reoxidized after removal of the sulphur. Alternatively, reoxidation and sulphur removal may be effected simultaneously by blowing air through the used solution.
