Abstract

An acid pickling bath for use in conditioning ferrous metal surfaces, contains a watersoluble ionizable thiocyanate and a compound capable of liberating elemental colloidal sulphur, said compound being present in such an amount that the colloidal sulphur liberated therefrom can remain dispersed in colloidal form. The acid may be sulphuric or hydrochloric, the thiocyanate is preferably sodium thiocyanate although it may be replaced partly or wholly by other water-soluble ionizable thiocyanates such as the potassium or ammonium compounds, and the sulphur-liberating compound is preferably sodium thiosulphate although other compounds, such as sodium polysulphide, may be used. Preferably, the sulphur-liberating compound is present in an amount sufficient to liberate 1-8 parts of colloidal sulphur in 5425 parts of acid (calculated as 7 per cent H2SO4) and the thiocyanate (calculated as sodium thiocyanate) is present in an amount of 3-10 times the weight of the sulphur-liberating compound (calculated as sodium thiosulphate). A composition suitable for addition to an acid pickling bath is given by way of example and comprises sodium thiocyanate, sodium thiosulphate, dextrose, caustic soda and an acid-stable wetting agent.
