Abstract

Metals (particularly silicon iron) are descaled by treatment with an aqueous solution having a pH of 3-9 and containing a fluoborate which on hydrolysis gives off hydrofluoric acid and boric acid. The solution preferably contains a cation which forms a readily soluble fluoborate and a less soluble fluosilicate: the preferred fluoborate is thus potassium fluoborate. The solution may also contain ammonium fluoride; a wetting agent such as cetyl pyridinium bromide, the sodium salt of an alkylated naphthalene sulphonate or the sodium salt of secondary dodecyl sulphate; and an inhibitor such as thiourea. Treatment is preferably effected by boiling with air or steam agitation.
