Abstract

Mercaptans in some hydrocarbon distillates are oxidized by contacting with an oxidizing agent, for example air, or oxygen, in the presence of an alkaline reagent, and a phthalocyanine catalyst composited with a solid support in the form of a fixed bed. The phthalocyanine may be a metal phthalocyanine, for example cobalt or vanadium phthalocyanine sulphonate or carboxylate. Suitable alkaline reagents include the alkali metal hydroxides in aqueous solution, which solution may additionally contain a solution such as methanol, ethanol, phenols, cresols, tannin or isobutyrate. Suitable carriers for the catalyst include activated carbons, silica such as sand or glass beads; clays and silicates, aluminas, ceramics, and magnesium compound. A detailed test is provided. The carrier may be immersed in a solution of the phthalocyanine compound, or the carrier may be sprayed, and finally dried. The oxidation may be effected at 0-150 DEG C., and the distillate and air are desirably passed upwards through the catalyst bed. Specification 849,998 is referred to.
