Abstract
Aromatic hydrocarbons are purified by passing in vapour phase together with a hydrogen-containing gas at atmospheric pressure or slightly above and at a temperature of between 350 DEG and 550 DEG C. over a platinum catalyst prepared by the reduction of platinum oxide under a liquid (see Group III). The hydrogen-containing gas may be town's gas or water gas. In examples the sulphur content of naphthalene and crude benzol is reduced; phenols are also removed from naphthalene; the naphthalene may first be washed with a detergent as described in Specification 694,327. Reference is also made to the treatment of benzene, toluene, and xylene. When the catalyst loses activity, it may be revivified by heating first in air diluted with inert gas and then in air alone at 650 DEG C. Specification 438,354 also is referred to.ALSO:Platinum catalyst for use in the purification of aromatic hydrocarbons (see Group IV (b)) is obtained by the reduction of platinum oxide under a liquid. The catalyst may be prepared (a) by spraying an inert carrier with an aqueous solution of chloroplatinic acid, converting the acid to platinum oxide (e.g. by mixing with fused sodium nitrate and washing the melt with water and dilute nitric acid), reducing the oxide to metal by refluxing with a liquid, e.g. alcohol, in the presence of hydrogen, distilling off the liquid in an inert atmosphere, and washing and drying the product; or (b) by spraying an inert carrier with an aqueous solution of aluminium nitrate and chloroplatinic acid, drying, treating the coated carrier with fused sodium nitrate to form alumina and platinum oxide, and then reducing the platinum oxide as in (a). The platinum oxide may also be prepared by heating platinum in oxygen under pressure or by treating platinic chloride with alkali followed by acetic acid. Suitable carriers are activated alumina, china clay, and "Alundum" (Registered Trade Mark). The catalyst may contain 1-10 per cent of platinum and may be revivified by heating first in air diluted with inert gas and then in air alone at 650 DEG C.
