Abstract

Products of reduced mercaptan content and acceptable colour are obtained from sour hydrocarbon distillates by subjecting the distillate to the steps of (i) reacting with a gas containing free oxygen in the presence of a phthalocyanine catalyst and an alkaline reagent; and (ii) treating with sulphuric acid of 60-100% concentration, the steps being performed in either order, to obtain a refined distillate having a staybolt colour of above 25. Suitable catalysts are cobalt or vanadium phthalocyanine sulphonate with sodium or potassium hydroxide. The sulphuric acid may be spent sulphuric acid alkylation catalyst.
