Abstract

430,092. Sulphuric acid. TYRER, D., and CLARK, A. M., Norton Hall, The Green, Norton-on-Tees, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. Dec. 13, 1933, Nos. 35132 and 35134. [Class 1 (i)] A gas mixture containing at least 10 per cent of sulphur trioxide and at least 5 per cent of oxygen and preferably not more than 70 per cent of inert gases is subjected to catalysis under such conditions that not more than 80 per cent of the sulphur dioxide is oxidized. The sulphur trioxide and the remaining sulphur dioxide are successively condensed or absorbed and the latter is used for preparing further quantities of the gas mixture. The mixture may be prepared from burner gases or other weak gases by known methods such as liquefaction, adsorption in active charcoal &c., or absorption in a solvent, and the recovery of the unoxidized sulphur dioxide from the exit gas may be effected in the same apparatus. The sulphur trioxide is preferably condensed in presence of steam which may be added either before or after catalysis ; in the former case it may be derived from the absorbent solution used for concentration. The Figure diagrammatically illustrates the process. Specifications 371,888, 378,464, 400,998, 406,116, and 419,068 are referred to.
