Volatile liquids, recovering. - Acetone is recovered from gases containing it, e.g. air used in drying operations in the production of artificial silk, by absorption in an inorganic acid in a fairly high state of concentration but not sufficiently concentrated to decompose the acetone. The process is carried out by circulating the gases containing the acetone through towers in counter current to the acid. Sulphuric and phosphoric acids are mentioned as suitable, the sulphuric acid after absorption of the acetone being diluted to about 50 per cent acid before driving off the actone. Sulphuric acid of 150‹-110‹ Tw. is suitable and with a strength of 130‹ Tw. it is possible to obtain concentrations of acetone of 10, 20, 30 and 40 per cent of the acid used when the amount of acetone in the air is only 1.8, 4.6, 8.5, and 14.2 gas per cubic metre of air. With phosphoric acid good results are obtained with concentrations of 130-150‹ Tw.
