Abstract

<PICT:0472493/III/1> Nitric acid is concentrated in the presence of sulphuric acid by contacting the dilute liquid with gaseous sulphur trioxide. The gas is admitted through an inlet F at the base of a tower A filled with acid-resisting material B over which trickles a mixture of the nitric acid and 101 per cent sulphuric acid both preheated to 110 DEG C. Vapours of nitric acid pass out of the tower through an outlet C to a condenser. Fuming sulphuric acid and sulphur trioxide may both be generated in an oleum still, and the inlet pipes E, F for the acid and gas respectively are connected to the liquid and gas reservoirs of the still. Concentrated residual acid is also obtained. The process may be applied to the denitration of spent nitration acids. U.S.A. Specification 1,031,865 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the concentration of bromine water, acetic acid, and hydrochloric acid. Phosphoric acid is specified as an alternative dehydrating agent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
