Abstract

Trifluoracetic acid is produced by acid hydrolysis of CF3.CCl3, preferably in presence of a mercury sulphate as catalyst. Temperatures and pressures may be about normal or above. In an example, CF3.CCl3 and a mixture of mercurous and mercuric sulphates are cooled to 0 DEG C. and oleum containing 65 per cent SO3 added while the temperature rises to slightly above that of the room. When 83 per cent of the chlorine is hydrolysed, the mixture is decomposed with ice water, barium carbonate added, evaporated to dryness, extrated with alcohol, decomposed with sulphuric acid, and trifluoracetic acid recovered by distillation.
