Abstract

Methyl bromide is prepared by reacting methanol, bromine and sulphur at the boiling-point under elevated pressure to distil off the methyl bromide formed, while simultaneously introducing fresh quantities of the reactants into the heated reaction mixture. The pressure is preferably such that the boiling-point of the reaction mixture is 75-85 DEG C. Accumulation of sulphuric acid and other sulphur oxy-acids in the reaction vessel can be prevented by running off the acids continuously or intermittently. It is preferred to use more sulphur and more methanol relative to bromine than corresponds to the theoretical proportions of 1 : 6 : 6 respectively. An example is given.
