Abstract

Naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid is prepared by reacting naphthalene with sulphuric of 84-5 to 80% strength and allowing its concentration to fall during the reaction, the temperature of the reaction being maintained above 135% C. The reaction is preferably carried out by heating the naphthalene to a temperature above 135% C., allowing the sulphuric acid to flow in and maintaining the temperature at approximately 155 DEG to 160 DEG C. during practically the whole reaction period. Unsulphonated naphthalene present in the reaction mixture may be removed by steam distillation. The naphthalene-2-sulphonic acid may be obtained in the form of its sodium salt by introducing the sulphonation mixture into a saturated solution of sodium sulphate, the temperature of the crystalline slurry being maintained between 80 DEG and 100 DEG C.
