Abstract

PURPOSE: The selective sulfonation of 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid with sulfur trioxide-dioxane adduct is effected to produce title compound in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of naphthalene with sulfur trioxide-dioxane adduct is conducted at 0W120, preferably 20W50°C for 10W60min to form 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid. After neutralization with an alkali as sodium hydroxide, 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid salt is isolated. Then, the sulfonation of the product is repeated using sulfur trioxide/dioxane adduct at 100W150, preferably 120W140°C to produce 1,6-naphthalenedisulfonic acid.
