Abstract

PURPOSE: The trisulfonation of naphthalene is conducted using a sulfonation agent of sulfur trioxide/pyridine under specific conditions in one step to produce title compound in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between naphthalene and sulfur trioxide/pyridine adduct is effected at 230W270°C to produce 1,3,6-naphthalenetrisulfonic acid. The amount of the sulfonation reagent is over 3, usually 3W5 times the molar quantity of the naphthalene. The reaction temperature of lower than 230°C causes the production of disulfonated products and exceeding 270°C undesirably causes the decomposition of the sulfonation reagent.
