Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare highly pure orcinol in high yield, by sulfonating an alkali(ne earth) metal salt of m-toluenesulfonic acid to give the disulfonated product, converting the product to the dialkali salt and melting the salt in the presence of a caustic alkali.
CONSTITUTION: A toluenesulfonic acid mixture containing a large amount of m- isomer is mixed with a ≥15C alkyl or aralkyl tertiary amine and an organic solvent to extract the amine lake of toluenesulfonic acid into the organic layer, and an aqueous alkali solution is added to the layer to give the alkali(ne earth) metal salt. The salt is slowly added to 1W3 times mole of anhydrous sulfuric acid-containing oleum or sulfur trioxide and maintained at 100W180°C to effect the disulfonation reaction. The product is subjected to the amine lake-forming process, etc. to give the dialkali metal salt of 1,3,5-toluenedisulfonic acid. The salt is maintained at 300W400°C together with the flakes or an aqueous solution of caustic soda, etc. to give the desired product.
