1389104 #,#-Dioxoenanthaldehyde dialkyl acetals DAICEL Ltd 25 May 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 24577/72 Heading C2C Novel #,#-dioxoenanthaldehyde dialkyl acetals of general formula where R<SP>1</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl may be prepared by (1) reacting #,#-dialkoxypropionates of formula (R<SP>1</SP>O) 2 CHCH 2 COOR<SP>2</SP> where R<SP>2</SP> is C 1 -C 4 alkyl with methylethyl ketone in the presence of an inert solvent and a basic condensing agent, and (2) neutralizing with an acid. The neutralized mixture may further be distilled to obtain the crude product, which is then converted to the #,#-dioxoenanthaldehyde dialkyl acetal Na, Li or K salt by mixture with an aqueous solution of the alkali metal hydroxide, oxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, the salt mixture is extracted with an organic solvent to remove the impurities not forming alkali metal salts such as methyl 4-methyl-5-oxo-3-hexenate and the solution then acidified to pH not below 5 prior to further organic solvent extraction to obtain pure #,#-dioxoenanthaldehyde dialkyl acetal. The compounds of the invention are used as starting materials in the synthesis of 3-hydroxy-2- ethyl-4-pyrone.
