Abstract
PURPOSE: The oxidation of 3-chloro-4-methyl-2- or 2-chloro-3-methyl-6-benzoylbenzoic acid converts the methyl group to carboxyl group, which is dehydrated to form a ring, thus producing titled compound useful as intermediate of dyes.
CONSTITUTION: 3-Chloro-4-methyl-2- or 2-chloro-3-methyl-6-venzoylbenzoic acid of formula VIII is dissolved in 1W10wt% alkali metal hydroxide aqueous solution in an amount of 5W20 times the weight of formula VIII and an oxidant such as potassium permanganate is added thereto to effect the oxidation at 70W90°C. The resulting product is heated along with a dehydrating agent at 70W130, preferably 100W 105°C to effect ring closure thus giving the objective compound of formulaI. The dehydrating agent is e.g., sulfuric acid with more than 90% or oleum containing no more than 30% sulfur trioxide.
