Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an α-pigment having improved weatherability, light and heat resistance, simply and rapidly, by dissolving crude quinacridone (Q) in dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of a caustic alkali and water, and by diluting the solution to purify Q.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of crude quinacridone (Q) of formula is dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the presence of 1.5W2.5 moles of a caustic alkali, preferably a potassium salt, and water in an amount of 6W8 times that of Q at 60W90°C for 1W3 hr. Insoluble matter is filtered off, if necessary, and the resulting solution is diluted with water to give the objective α-quinacridone pigment. The weight ratio of the water to DMSO is preferably 3:97W30:70.
EFFECT: Non-contamination with sulfonates in the absence of sulfuric acid.
