Abstract
PURPOSE: To facilitate the separation of HEDTA in the industrial production of the chelating agent HEDTA from HEDTA-3Na, by adding a lower alcohol to the reaction mixture, thereby increasing the solubility and super saturation stability of HEDTA, while keeping the solubility of the by-produced inorganic salt unchanged.
CONSTITUTION: HEDTA II is liberated by adding a mineral acid to an aqueous solution of an alkali salt of N-hydroxyethylethylenediamine-N,N',N'-triacetic acid (HEDTA) I. Subsequent addition of a lower alcohol increases the solubility and supersaturation stability of HEDTA almost without changing the solubility of the by-produced inorganic mineral acid salt, and makes separation of HEDTA from the inorganic salt easier. The inorganic mineral acid salt is deposited and filtered off. Thereafter highly pure HEDTA crystal is obtained from the filtrate in a high yield.
