Abstract

2:5 Furandicarboxylic acid is prepared by heating a tetrahydroxy-butane-dicarboxylic acid HOOC-(CHOH)4-COOH, with concentrated sulphuric acid, first at 85 to 120 DEG C., until two molecular proportions of water have been eliminated and then at above 120 DEG C., preferably at 125-135 DEG C., until a third molecular proportion of water has been eliminated. Manno-saccharic, idosaccharic, talomucic, allomucic acids may be used or a reaction mixture obtained by mixing monopotassium saccharate with concentrated sulphuric acid which forms saccharic acid in situ. Sulphuric acid of at least 90%, preferably 100% strength, is used and zinc or aluminium sulphate may be added to the reaction. The product is washed with water and filtered and purified by way of its calcium or disodium salt.
