Abstract

N-Sulphanilyl-N1-butyl urea is prepared by reacting N-sulphanilyl urea with butylamine in a molar ratio of 1:1.2 and in a ketone solvent having a boiling point within the range of 90 to 120 DEG C., the ammonia split off during the reaction being removed as quickly as possible from the reaction mixture by first stirring the reactants together until a salt is formed between the N-sulphanilyl urea and the butylamine, then rapidly heating the reaction mixture to the boiling point and continuing boiling until after complete solution has been obtained. The ketone solvent may be a mixture of ketones and is preferably insoluble or only slightly insoluble in water. The use of methyl isobutyl ketone is exemplified.
