Abstract

In a process for the preparation of methionine, b -methylmercaptopropionaldehyde is reacted with a cyanide in anhydrous liquid ammonia at a temperature within the range of from -10 to +50 DEG C. to give methionine nitrile which is then hydrolysed. The process may be combined with that in which the b -methylmercaptopropionaldehyde is prepared by reacting methylmercaptoin with acrolein in the presence of ammonium methyl mercaptide. U.S.A. Specification 2,732,400 is referred to.
