Abstract

dl-Methionine is prepared by treating b -methylmercaptopropionaldehyde with an alkali metal bisulphite to give the addition product, treating this with an inorganic cyanide to form b - methylmercaptopropionaldehyde cyanohydrin, reacting this with ammonia to give methionine nitrile, and hydrolysing the latter to dl-methionine. The preparation of the nitrile is preferably carried out using ammonia and ammonium chloride in methanol at 100 DEG C. In the examples, dl-methionine is prepared by the above sequence of reactions; the nitrile is hydrolysed to dl-methionine with aqueous hydrogen chloride.
