Abstract

<PICT:0967458/C1/1> <PICT:0967458/C1/2> <PICT:0967458/C1/3> Cyanogen chloride is prepared continuously by reacting within a confined zone an atomized aqueous solution, e.g. 5-20%, of an alkali metal, e.g. Na, cyanide with gaseous chlorine in the molar proportions 0.91 to 1.75 Cl2 to NaCN. The NaCN may be prepared in situ by reacting HCN with NaOH, preferably before contact with Cl2. The atomization may be carried out in a two component, or where NaCN is produced in situ, a three component mixing nozzle. NaCN solution in 11 is atomized by Cl2 in 10 and CNCl is flashed off at 80-95 DEG C., withdrawn at 12 and dried by condensation and dessication. NaCl solution is drained off through 13 via trap 14.
