Abstract
A process for the preparation of a guanamine comprises reacting dicyandiamide with a nitrile or polynitrile in liquid ammonia in the presence of a catalyst consisting of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, an alkali metal hydroxide or amide, or other strongly basic alkali metal compound, at a temperature between 0 DEG and 120 DEG C. (preferably 60 DEG and 100 DEG C.). The molecular ratio of dicyandiamide to nitrile is preferably between 1.05 and 1.25, and the catalyst is preferably sodium hydroxide in an amount between 4 and 8 per cent by weight of dicyandiamide. The reaction is preferably conducted in an austenitic stainless steel vessel. The examples describe the preparation of benzoguanamine, phenylacetoguanamine, acetoguanamine and 4-cyanovaleroguanamine.
