Abstract

The invention comprises glutaraldehyde dicyanhydrin. It may be prepared by reacting glutaraldehyde with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of a basic catalyst. The preferred temperature range for the process is 0 DEG -4 DEG C. Suitable catalysts are, for example, ammonia, an amine or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide having a dissociation constant at 25 DEG C. of at least 1 X 10-5, an alkali metal hydroxide, an alkaline earth metal hydroxide, a basic reacting alkali metal salt, or a basic reacting ion-exchange material. The glutaraldehyde used as starting material may be prepared by hydrolysis of ethoxydihydropyran in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acid catalyst.
