Abstract

The invention comprises 2,2,6-trichloro-1,2-epoxycyclohexanecarbonitrile and its corresponding carbonamide, 2,6,6 - trichloro - 1,2-epoxycyclohexanecarbonamide. The carbonitrile is prepared (a) by reacting 2,2,6,6-tetrachlorocyclohexanone with a mixture of hydrogen cyanide and an alkali metal cyanide, or (b) by treating 2,2,6,6-tetrachloro-1-hydroxycyclohexanecarbonitrile with an alkali metal cyanide. The carbonamide is prepared (a) by hydrolysing the carbonitrile of the invention under alkaline conditions, e.g. by treating the carbonitrile with an aqueous or aqueous alcoholic solution of an alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature below 30 DEG C., or (b) by treating 2,2,6,6 - tetrachloro - 1 - hydroxycyclohexane-carbonamide with a base, e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, or an organic nitrogeneous base.
