Abstract

Caprolactom is prepared by rearranging cyclohexanom-oximi with sulphuric acid and neutralizing the sulphuric acid liquor so produced with an aqueous solution of ammonium sulphite and/or bisulphite. The cyclohexanone-oxime may be prepared from cyclohexanone and hydroxylamine which is made by Raschigs reaction using the sulphur dioxide evolved in the neutralization step. In a preferred embodiment, the sulphuric acid liquor is neutralized with an aqueous solution containing, per litre, 1.3 to 2.7 moles of ammonium sulphite and 2.7 to 1.3 moles of ammonium bisulphite.
