Abstract

Homocysteic acid is prepared by reacting together in aqueous solution acrolein, sulphurous acid or sulphur dioxide, hydrogen cyanide or a substance capable of releasing cyanide ions in aqueous solution and ammonia or a substance capable of releasing ammonium ions in aqueous solution to form an intermediate product which is subsequently hydrolysed to form the desired homocysteic acid or a salt thereof. Carbon dioxide or a substance capable of releasing carbonate ions in aqueous solution may also be introduced into said aqueous solution to react with said acrolein and other reactants. The various reactants may be added in any order and some may be pre-reacted with other reactants before addition of the remaining reactants. Intermediate heating stages may also be employed. Specifications 941,498 and 991,551 are referred to.
