Abstract
Dimethylolglyoxalmonoureine is made by reacting urea with an equimolar amount of glyoxal in an aqueous medium at pH of 3.8 to 4.2 at 25-60 DEG C. and reacting the intermediate thus obtained, without isolation, with two molar equivalents of formaldehyde at a pH of 7 to 7.5 at 25-60 DEG C. As glyoxal in aqueous solution shows an acid reaction it is usually necessary to adjust the pH at both stages with an alkaline reagent, preferably sodium carbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate. The glyoxal is preferably used as a 40% by wt. aqueous solution and the formaldehyde as a 30-40% by wt. aqueous solution.
