Abstract

a : g -Dihydroxy-b : b -dimethylbutyramide is prepared by treating a -hydroxy-b : b -dimethyl-g -butyrolactone with a concentrated aqueous solution of ammonia containing at least 14% by weight of ammonia, at atmospheric pressure and without the external application of heat. The ammonia solution may be provided by 28% by weight ammonia in water or by dissolving in water any compound which liberates ammonia in water, e.g. ammonium carbonate. If desired, the ammonia solution may be prepared in presence of the pantolactone by passing ammonia gas through an aqueous solution of the pantolactone. The process may be conducted in the presence of ammonium chloride, which functions as a catalyst, and is applicable to optically active starting materials. Specification 884,679 is referred to.
