Abstract

The tendency of materials composed wholly or partly of wool to felt or shrink when washed is reduced by treating them with an aqueous solution of permonosulphuric acid or a salt or salts thereof, the solution having a pH which is not within the range 2 to 7 and, if the pH is below 2, containing not less than 10 per cent by weight of sulphuric acid. To obtain a pH greater than 7 an alkaline material, e.g. caustic soda, is added to the solution. Treatment may be effected at temperatures up to 50 DEG C.
