Abstract
Benzene hexachloride, in a finely-divided, almost amorphous form, with a low melting point, is manufactured by treating benzene with chlorine in the presence of a catalyst which is or forms a compound with chlorine which does not liberate chlorine again under the conditions of the reaction, or in emulsion in a concentrated aqueous solution of a salt of a base, which base forms a compound with chlorine which does not liberate chlorine p under the conditions of the reaction. In examples: (1) chlorine is passed into benzene at 50-60 DEG C. in daylight in the presence of a drop of mercury; (2) chlorine is passed into benzene, to which a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride has been added, at 55-70 DEG C., in daylight. Calcium chloride is specified as an alternative to sodium chloride.
