Abstract

543,944. Hypochlorous acid. CARTER, C., JACKSON, E. R. B., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 11, 1940, No. 14078. [Class 1 (ii)] Hypochlorous acid is produced by treating an aqueous solution containing an alkali or alkaline earth, metal hypochloride, e.g. calcium hypocloride, with chlorine so as to produce a reaction liquor containing hypochlorous acid and vaporizing the hypochlorous acid as soon as formed. The vaporization is effected by a supply of inert gas, e.g. steam or air, at atmosphere or reduced pressure and at a temperature between 60‹ and 100‹C. The reaction and withdrawal of the acid may be effected in a single scrubbing tower down which the solution is passed against an ascending current of steam, chlorine and optionally air; or the reaction with chlorine may be effected in counter current in one tower and stripping of the hypochlorous acid by immediate treatment in an adjacent tower. The hypochlorous acid may be fractionally. condensed to produce a hypochlorous acid solution or may be absorbed in an alkaline liquor, e.g. sodium hydroxide to produce a hypochloride.
