Abstract

Chlorine dioxide is obtained by reacting chlorine with an aqueous solution of a water soluble chlorite. Alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorites may be employed. Preferably, the reaction is conducted in neutral solution. The chlorine for reaction may be diluted with an inert gas such as nitrogen or air. The reaction may be conducted at a temperature of 20--25 DEG C. Chlorine may be eliminated from gas mixtures comprising chlorine and chlorine dioxide by passing the gas mixture through an aqueous solution of a chlorite as above described.
