Abstract

Chlorine dioxide is generated in admixture with an inert diluent gas, e.g., air by contacting a solid alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorite or chlorate with a mixture of a gaseous acid, e.g., hydrochloric, nitric or acetic acid and the diluent gas, the mixture having been formed by passing the diluent gas into contact with a solution of the acid maintained under constant conditions, the acid concentration of the mixture being controlled by regulating the rate at which the diluent gas is passed into contact with the acid solution.
