Abstract

Chlorine dioxide is made by reacting nitrogen trichloride with a chlorite, e.g. of an alkali or alkaline earth metal such as sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium chlorite. The reaction may be effected either (a) in solution according to the equation: NCl3+3H2O+6NaClO2 \sX 6ClO2+3NaCl+3NaOH+NH3, in which the evloved NH3 acts as a diluent for the ClO2, and the NaOH is prevented from accumulating by physical separation, i.e. by neutralising with an acid and crystallising out the salt thus formed, or (b) in the dry, according to the equation: 2NCl3+6NaClO2=6ClO2+6NaCl+ N2. In a preferred embodiment NCl3, made by bubbling a diluent gas, e.g. air, carbon dioxide or nitrogen, through a mixture of chlorine water and ammonium chloride, is contacted with powdered or granular sodium chlorite, the rate of supply of NCl3 being controlled to produce a diluent having a desired content of pure ClO2.
