Abstract
In the manufacture of chlorine dioxide by reacting alkali or alkaline earth metal chlorates with aqueous mineral acid solution, less acid than the stoichiometrical proportion corresponding to the chlorate is used, the remaining excess chlorate being supplemented by further chlorate and then subjected again to the acid treatment. The residue solution remaining after the reaction may be partially evaporated and the <PICT:0672047/III/1> solution subjected to a chlorate electrolysis to convert the chloride formed in the reaction to chlorate. Alternatively the chloride may be removed from the evaporated residue solution by crystallization and fresh chlorate added. In the drawing, a chlorate solution from a container 1 is fed to a series of reaction vessels 2-7 and reacted with hydrochloric acid from container 8. A current of air is drawn through pipe 9 through the vessels 7 to 2 and out at pipe 14 together with the chlorine dioxide and chlorine produced. The reaction solution is passed from collection vessel 11 to an evaporator 12 and thence dependent on whether the chloride is wholly removed or not to a vessel 15 where fresh chlorate and water is added, or to an electrolysis vessel 19. The solution is recycled via pipes 17 or 21 respectively to the container 1.
