Abstract

1326357 Bromine recovery from Br 2 /Cl 2 mixtures IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 15 Sept 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 49498/69 Heading C1A Bromine is recovered from a mixture of chlorine and bromine by reacting the mixture with an aqueous alkali to form a solution containing the corresponding chloride and hypochlorite and bromide and hypobromite, subjetting the resulting solution to the action of a quantity of reducing agent capable of reducing the hypochlorite in an amount which is insufficient to bring about complete reduction of the soln., acidifying the solution obtained to liberate the bromine which is then recovered, e.g. by a stream of air or steam. The alkali may an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide and the reducing agent may be SO 2 or a sulphate. In a comparative experiment the reduction step is omitted, yielding a less pure Br 2 . The chlorine/bromine mixtures treated may be then obtained from bromide containing brines by chlorination or the distillation residue obtained in purifying chlorine.
