Abstract

1,250,171. Mercury vapour removal. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 12 Aug., 1969 [21 Sept., 1968], No. 44984/68. Heading C1A. Mercury vapour is removed from gas streams by scrubbing with an alkaline solution of an alkali metal hypochlorite, containing alkali metal or calcium chloride substantially in excess of the chemical equivalent of the hypochlorite. Mercury passes into solution and may be recovered either chemically or electrolytically. The available chlorine content of the scrubbing solution should be in the range 0À02-25À00 g./1., and the pH should be in the range 8-12, preferably 9-10À5. There should be an appreciable excess of chloride over available chlorine in solution, which excess increases with increasing pH.
