Abstract

1368966 Recovering mercury BP CHEMICALS Ltd 1 Dec 1971 [31 Dec 1970] 61948/70 Heading C7D Mercury is recovered from aqueous solutions of mercury compounds, e.g. spent brine solutions from mercury cathode cells by passing an inert gas through the solution in the presence of a reducing agent which may be ferrous sulphate, when the pH of the aqueous solution is greater than 5, sodium borohydride, hydrazine, hydroxylamine salts of hydrazine or hydroxylamine, or D-glucose, when the solution is alkaline, or iron or steel turnings or chips and recovering the mercury entrained in the effluent gas stream. The inert gas is preferably air or nitrogen with the temperature of the aqueous solution maintained between 35 and 95‹C. The process may be applied to solutions containing mercury in elemental or insoluble compound form by incorporating a suitable conversion treatment to soluble compound. If the aqueous solution contains oxidizing agents, then an initial reduction step employing sodium sulphite or sulphur dioxide is provided before the inert gas blowing. Mercury may be recovered from the effluent gas stream using methods disclosed in Specifications 1250171 (see Division C1) and 1207215.
