Abstract
1438064 Ferric ferrocyanide, Berlin blue DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 1 Feb 1974 [19 Feb 1973] 04783/74 Heading C1A Berlin blue, stated to be ferric ferrocyanide, is made by reacting sodium or calcium ferrocyanide with a ferrous salt at pH below 7 to form FeH 2 [Fe(CN) 6 ], converting tin ferrocyanide into Berlin white by treatment with a potassium salt at a pH below 7, and oxidizing the white to Berlin blue. The ferrous salt may be FeCl 2 or waste pickle liquor. Calcium or sodium ions may be washed out of the precipitated ferrocyanide before treatment with the potassium salt, e.g. KCl or K 2 SO 4 . Conversion to Berlin white may be effected at atmospheric pressure or above, at 60‹ C. to the boiling point. The pH preferably does not exceed 1. Specified oxidants are aqueous solutions of alkali metal chlorate or chromate, or H 2 O 2 . In examples, the Berlin white is oxidized by KClO 3 at 50- 60‹ C. In one embodiment, the calcium ferrocyanide to be reacted with the ferrous salt is formed in situ from a solution of Ca(OH) 2 , HCN and ferrous salt.
